
Recreational Pilot Permit (RPP)
The Recreational Pilot Permit (RPP) can be a stepping stone to obtaining a Private Pilot Licence (PPL), which allows for more privileges, such as flying at night, carrying multiple passengers, and flying in different weather conditions. You can upgrade from an RPP to a PPL by completing additional training and passing the necessary examinations.
Pre-requisites
- must have a current medical (minimum Category 4) for the flight test
- minimum 16 years of age (14 for first solo)
- must pass an English proficiency test
- may need to pass a Radiotelephone Operator's Restricted Certificate exam
- must have a Student Pilot Permit (SPP) prior to solo flight
Training Requirements
- a minimum of 25 hours of flight training (including dual and solo time)
- 15 hours must be dual instruction (with an instructor)
- 5 hours must be solo flight time
- a pass of the RPP written exam (minimum of 60%)
- a pass of the RPP flight test to the standard outlined in the Flight Test Standards by Transport Canada
Privileges
- allows the holder to fly single engine aircraft that are classified as non-high performance
- allows the holder to fly during daylight hours under Visual Flight Rules (VFR)
- allows the holder to carry up to one (1) passenger
